The Ombudsman Board has finished their review, which began in November 2013, thanks to Der Falter Investigative Reporter Joseph Gepp.  Their findings were forwarded to the Minister of the Interior, and then given to the (SoKo) ‘Sonderkommission’ Cold Case Squad of the Austrian Police. 

Back in March of 2010 I wrote in my blog that the Vienna newspaper Kurier had ran an article about the newly formed Cold Case Squad and that Aeryn’s case had been listed as case # 2 that they were planning on investigating.  Within a few days of that publication, I was notified by friends in Vienna who contacted the Police, that Aeryn’s case was not going to be given to the Cold Case Squad. There was no explanation other than the newspaper did not report accurately.

I am happy to say that now it is finally happening.

Aeryn Gillern: Police re-opens case 

Six years ago the US citizen disappeared without a trace after visiting a sauna in Vienna. Now, a murder investigation is finally on its way.

There are stories that just don’t make sense. Where contradictions remain, no matter how you look at it. Like the story of Aeryn Gillern, US citizen, who lived in Vienna, worked at the UN and was gay.

When Gillern disappeared on the evening of the 29th of October 2007, he was 34 years old. 

On that day, more than six years ago, that man ran out of the Kaiserbründl, a discrete gay sauna in Vienna’s first district, completely naked. Since then he is gone. "He jumped into the Danube Canal to commit suicide", is was police said after the incident. But inconsistencies and doubt remain until today. 

Gillern’s case is one of the most mysterious in recent Austrian history - however police never cared much about him. For years now critics, such as members of the Green Party, and Gillern's mother Kathy, have accused the investigators of sloppiness, indifference and homophobia. In 2008 the “Falter” exposed numerous and severe shortcomings that took place during the investigation. 

Now things are about to change. “We are re-opening the case and looking at every detail”, says Mario Hejl, spokesperson of the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation. Before that, the Ombudsman Board re-evaluated the case. On the part of the police, the new Cold Case Squad is now responsible for the case. This department, founded 2010, is using special investigative methods to deal with complex cases that date back some time.  Among these are the cases of Julia Kührer and Natascha Kampusch.

 

Is is possible, that the mysterious disappearance of the US citizen was no suicide at all, but a crime case? Even after six years time, some heavy weight evidence is pointing in that direction. For example they never found his dead body in the Danube, which is very implausible. Furthermore there was a dubious quarrel at the sauna right before Gillern's disappearance. Details about that were never brought to light, as the owners of the sauna stay silent until today.

And it’s not only the quarrel, and the absence of a dead body that are leading to more questions, it is also Gillern’s run through the City Centre. No one saw the running, naked man -  6 feet tall, muscular, with a shaved head - in the very lively streets of the first district. Only two students from Germany came forward in 2008, after an article in the "Falter", who had seen Gillern running by Stubentor. They thought he had just lost a bet. 

Apart from the low number of witnesses it is the chronology of events from that evening in October 2007 that doesn’t add up. At exactly 8:21pm a fisherman at the Danube Canal heard a splash - perhaps Gillern jumping into the water. But that is 90 minutes after he had left the sauna. And the distance between the Kaiserbründl and the Danube Canal is only about half a mile.  

"We want to resolve these oddities now“, says police spokesperson Hejl. He is asking potential witnesses to get in contact with the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation.

Fall Aeryn Gillern: Die Polizei rollt die Causa neu auf

Vor sechs Jahren verschwand ein US-Amerikaner nach einem Saunabesuch spurlos. Nun beginnen endlich Mordermittlungen

Es gibt Geschichten, die einfach keinen Sinn ergeben. Die Widersprüche bleiben groß, wie man sie auch dreht und wendet. So wie die Geschichte von Aeryn Gillern, US-Amerikaner, in Wien lebend, Uno-Mitarbeiter, homosexuell.

Als Gillern am Abend des 29. Oktober 2007 spurlos verschwand, war er 34 Jahre alt.

An diesem Tag vor über sechs Jahren rannte der Mann nackt aus dem Kaiserbründl, einer diskreten Schwulensauna im ersten Bezirk. Seither ist er weg. Er habe durch einen Sprung in den Donaukanal Selbstmord begangen, meinte die Polizei nach dem Vorfall. Doch die Ungereimtheiten und Zweifel sind bis heute immens.

Der Fall Gillern ist einer der rätselhaftesten in Österreich in den vergangenen Jahren - doch die Polizei hat sich bisher nie besonders für ihn interessiert. Seit Jahren machen Kritiker wie die Grünen oder Gillerns Mutter Kathy den Ermittlern Schlamperei, Desinteresse und Homophobie zum Vorwurf. Im Jahr 2008 deckte der Falter zahlreiche schwere Mängel bei den Ermittlungen auf.

Nun aber soll alles anders werden. "Wir gehen die Causa neu und gründlich an", sagt Mario Hejl, Pressesprecher des Bundeskriminalamts. Zuvor hatte auch die Volksanwaltschaft den Fall Gillern komplett neu aufgerollt. Aufseiten der Polizei ist nun die neue Cold-Case-Einheit dafür zuständig. Diese 2010 gegründete Abteilung behandelt mit speziellen Ermittlungsmethoden komplizierte und länger zurückliegende Causen, etwa auch jene von Julia Kührer und Natascha Kampusch.

Ist das rätselhafte Verschwinden des Amerikaners vielleicht doch nicht auf einen Selbstmord zurückzuführen, sondern auf einen Kriminalfall? Darauf deuten auch nach sechs Jahren noch schwerwiegende Indizien hin. So tauchte niemals eine Leiche aus der Donau auf, was äußerst selten vorkommt. Zudem gab es unmittelbar vor Gillerns Verschwinden einen ominösen Streit in der Sauna. Genaueres darüber hat man nie erfahren, die Betreiber schweigen bis heute eisern.

Doch nicht nur der Streit und die fehlende Leiche werfen Fragen auf, sondern auch Gillerns Lauf durch die Innenstadt. Niemand will den rennenden nackten Mann gesehen haben - 1,85 Meter groß, muskulös, rasierte Glatze -, und das mitten in den belebten Gassen des ersten Bezirks. Einzig ein deutsches Studentenpärchen meldete sich im Jahr 2008 nach Falter-Berichten. Das Paar sah Gillern am Stubentor vorbeilaufen und hielt dies für eine verlorene Wette.

Neben der geringen Zahl an Zeugen ist auch die zeitliche Abfolge an jenem Oktoberabend 2007 total unstimmig. Exakt um 20.21 Uhr vernahm ein Angler am Donaukanal ein Platschen - möglicherweise Gillern, der ins Wasser sprang. Doch zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren bereits fast eineinhalb Stunden vergangen, seit der Mann aus der Sauna gerannt war. Dabei beträgt die Entfernung zwischen dem Kaiserbründel und dem Donaukanal nicht einmal einen Kilometer.

"All diese Merkwürdigkeiten wollen wir jetzt aufklären", sagt Polizeisprecher Hejl. Etwaige Zeugen bittet er, sich beim Bundeskriminalamt zu melden.
